Pacific Urethanes Modified Dirt Cup
Blank Image
The Modified Dirt Cup is BACK!!! This meeting is a two nighter this weekend (Friday 17 March & Saturday 18 March) at Waikaraka Park Speedway.

Thirty cars from all over the country have entered, with cars coming from as far as Christchurch to take place in the event.

The Modified Dirt Cup always draws a good field of Modifieds and this year is no exception, with the organisers putting heaps into the event. It is the richest Modified event ever held in New Zealand, with a prize pool of $21,000.00.

1NZ Tony Galbraith, 2NZ (59A) Allan Haigh, and 3NZ Cliff Frost are all entered for the event. Local driver, 11A Jamie Fox who recently won the North Island Modified Champs down in Huntly, is also entered.

Three cars are coming up from the South Island, those drivers being 7GM Steve Thompson, 84C Natasha Rodgers, and current 3NZ Cliff Frost.

Tracks that will be represented at Waikaraka Park in the Modified class this weekend include Huntly, Rotorua, Stratford, Wellington, Greymouth and Christchurch, with a lot of local Auckland cars also entered. The Modified class is definitely well and truly alive in Auckland, with consistent good fields presenting right throughout the season so far. In the Auckland Modified ranks, there is a good combination of experienced, talented drivers, plus a lot of new talent emerging as well which is really great to see.

From Huntly, we have back-to-back 1NZ Tony Galbraith, and 97H Matt Hazelton entered. Rotorua are represented by 89R Greg Brown, 22R Glen Lloyd, and 19R Scott Lane. 9W (former 2NZ, and twice 3NZ) Tama Arapere is coming up from Wellington to contest this prestigeous title.

Representing Stratford we have brothers 55S Paul Ward and 77S Craig Ward. Craig had a spectacular tumble recently at Te Marua, down in Wellington a few weeks back, but is expected to be in Auckland for the Modified Dirt Cup. Look out for the two blue Modifieds, with "RealiseIT" down the sides of them! Also from Stratford we have long time stalwart 10S Willie Noonan, as well as 4S Mark Dixon, and 71S John Jackson.

And last but not least the Local boys!! Heading the local contingent are current 2NZ (59A) Allan Haigh, and newly crowned North Island Modified Champion, 11A Jamie Fox, not forgetting the two purple and white Pacific Urethanes sponsored cars of 6A Brian Jesen and 56A Paul Blakeley, who took a hefty tumble last weekend at Waikaraka Park and caught fire. I understand Paul is okay, and he is expected to compete in the event this weekend. Other Local drivers also entered are 36A Phil Crumpe "Red Cat Racing", and 8A Craig McLeish the "Blu Rat", as well as 29A Mark Wade, 31A Mike Perewiti, 33A Chris Drube, 38A Brian Campbell (who made his Modified debut last weekend at Waikaraka Park), 66A Chris Picknell, 69A Hayden Scheiffer, 78A Ray Chatfield, and 99A Nathan Robertson.

Combine all of those names previously mentioned in this write-up and you have one helluva good recipe for two nights of spectacular Modified action!! This is a very classy lineup of Modifieds. Will this title stay at home in Auckland, or will one of the visitors take the silverware home with them? Make sure you're there to find out!! Best of luck to all drivers competing, and may the best driver on the weekend win.
